Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs approved the application of Hebei Quzhou Chenguang Biotechnology Group Co., Ltd. for marigold extract (the effective ingredient is quercetin) as a new feed additive, which is allowed to be produced, operated, and used in China. This new product has created an international precedent in the feed additive industry.
Quercetin is a flavonoid alcohol compound found in chrysanthemum residue, a waste that has been extracted with lutein. It is a research achievement of Morninglight Biology to promote waste reuse. In 2018, Morninglight Biology established a research team represented by senior engineer Dr. Wu Di to focus on in-depth research on chrysanthemum residue. After four years of unremitting efforts, it finally found quercetin with a content of about 6%. Due to its significant antioxidant effect, it can alleviate oxidative stress damage in animals, improve animal production performance, and can be used as a natural additive product to replace antibiotics in the livestock and poultry breeding industry. With the support of the National Key Research and Development Plan Intergovernmental International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Project, the new feed additive was approved on November 3, 2022.
"Once our product was launched, it was immediately welcomed by enterprises pursuing ecological aquaculture quality. The market price was 40000 yuan per ton, and 40000 tons of chrysanthemum residue can produce 2000 tons of quercetin. However, the remaining chrysanthemum residue feed also contains quercetin, which increased the price per ton from 300 yuan to 800 yuan. As a result, the value-added benefits of chrysanthemum residue reached over 2000 yuan per ton, and worthless waste became the raw material for new products." "And has opened up a new way for green farming in the whole society." Lu Qingguo, the chairman of the company, said that the company is currently carrying out in-depth research on marigold extract in the fields of food medicine and health care in accordance with the national key research plan, with a view to exploring a broader application space in the fields of ordinary food, health food, and pharmaceutical products.
